An Unhappy Vampire

The musty, mildewy smell seemed much stronger to Tony today. Or had Mrs. Washman just made him more aware of it?

He stopped in the doorway and blinked.

“Rudolph?” he said quietly. “I brought your things with me.”

“Why so early again?” came the unfriendly answer from the depths of the space.

“May I turn on the light?” asked Tony cautiously.

“No!” shrieked the little vampire. “For Pete’s sake, no lights so soon after I wake up!”

A match flared, and Tony saw the vampire light the candle on the edge of the coffin.

“I haven’t even brushed my teeth yet,” he grumbled, and pulled a red toothbrush with bent bristles from the coffin.

“But you don’t have any water,” Tony said.

“So what?” said the vampire, looking daggers at him. “I don’t need water.”

“Oh,” said Tony. “I just thought…”

“What did you think?” the vampire growled as he rubbed the toothbrush around in his mouth.

Tony took the cape and tights out of the sports bag and placed them over the edge of the coffin.

The vampire didn’t seem to want to take notice of either him or the stuff.

“Are you angry?” Tony finally asked.

“Yes!” the vampire grumbled.

“Because of yesterday?”

“Yes.”

Tony pondered. “Because I danced with Anna?”

“No!” the vampire roared. “Because you just disappeared. I looked for you everywhere in the ruins and ran straight into Aunt Dorothee’s arms!”

“Oh!” said Tony, who sympathized all too well with Rudolph’s horror. “And?”

“She told Elisabeth the Glutton—head of the vampires—that I was there, and Elisabeth found me and reprimanded me.”

“Reprimanded you? Why?”

“Because she said it was impertinent of me to go to the vampire gathering while I was banned from the crypt. I didn’t know that meant I was also banned from all festivities!” he added angrily.

“So, I guess that means the crypt ban hasn’t been lifted yet?” asked Tony.

“No, and on top of that,” shouted the vampire, “I was given a two-day flight ban!”

“Flight ban?” said Tony, not understanding.

“Yes. I have to get my, uh, food on foot.”

“All I hear about is bans!” shouted Tony indignantly. “Crypt ban, festivities ban, flight ban… It’s like a dictatorship.”

The little vampire shrugged his shoulders sadly. “What can I do?” he said.

“Defend yourself!” shouted Tony.

But the vampire just shook his head tiredly. “That may be possible for you humans, but with us vampires, the consequences would be horrific.”

“Like what?” asked Tony curiously.

The vampire gave him a sad look and whispered, “Being banned from acting like a vampire.”

“Banned from acting like a vampire?” Tony asked, confused. “What does that mean, exactly?”

“You can’t do any more vampire things.”

“Which means?” asked Tony, still not understanding.

“You starve,” said the vampire in a grave voice. Tony looked shocked. Vampire disciplinary methods were really harsh. Now he was feeling really lucky that he wasn’t one.

“What can I do to help you?” Tony asked, feeling sorry for the vampire.

The vampire’s eyes began to glow. “Would you do that for me?” he said, licking his lips excitedly.

Tony’s blood went cold. “Anything but that,” he begged, stepping away. “I mean it—anything except that.”

The vampire’s face saddened again.
